Annie McHale Workshops

At the age of seventeen, Annie MacHale first discovered the inkle loom, sparking a lifelong love affair. She built her first loom in 1976 with the help of her dad and a library book. Since then she’s woven miles of bands including over 1,200 guitar straps. She loves to play with colors and patterns and the inkle loom provides a very satisfying way to do this.
Annie is known to many through her blog, ASpinnerWeaver.com. The popularity of her patterns shared there led to the 2019 publication of a book, “In Celebration of Plain Weave: Color and Design Inspiration for Inkle Weavers”. This was followed by another book in 2021, “Three-Color Pickup for Inkle Weavers: A Modern Look at an Ancient Baltic-Style Technique” in which she shares a rare, older Lithuanian technique which has fallen out of use.
In her workshops she shares her decades of experience as a weaver working exclusively on inkle looms, her unique insight into working with color, and her discovery of three-color pickup.

#402 Annie MacHale-Three-Color Pickup for Inkle Weavers Full Day Saturday 9am- 4pm
Bldg 9 Center $100

Skill: Advanced
Prerequisite: Students should be able to warp and weave on an inkle loom

Description: The horizontal bar pickup technique is commonly used by indigenous weavers in North, Central and South America. We will look at woven samples to discover several variations on this technique and discuss charting methods. Students will warp their looms, and work with printed patterns to develop their own designs on the loom.
Annie will share tips for warping, fixing mistakes, starting and stopping, and keeping selvages straight. She will also demonstrate how to temporarily remove and replace the warp, as well as how to cut the final project off the loom and handle it when it is complete.

As time and student interest allow, we can also explore a free online tool for creating patterns

Homework: None

Students Should Bring: Inkle loom, belt shuttle, sharp scissors, 30 string or texsolv heddles sized to fit the loom, note-taking materials, cotton yarn in 4 high-contrast colors in sport/DK weight or perle cotton/crochet cotton #3 Optional: Laptop or tablet for use with online pattern tool

Material Fee: $5.00 Covers- Handouts, sticks, rubber mats

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0197/0296/files/A._MacHale_Horizontal_Bars_2_-_Annie_MacHale.jpg?v=1771538793
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0197/0296/collections/2025_-_Annie_MacHale_0da95b25-fada-4f22-97d7-a3e9007b3516.jpg?v=1771539006
https://www.michiganfiberfestival.info/collections/annie-mchale-3-color-pickup-on-an-inkle-loom.oembed
