Workshop Description: Fiber preparation has a strong influence on the yarn you spin. In this workshop we will practice using hand-held tools to prepare fiber for spinning. Although there is some overlap in what you can do with flick cards, hand cards, and hand combs, each tool has its own special functions. There will be a strong focus on the importance of physical comfort: we will cover how to choose the right tool for your hands and the fiber you prepare, as well as techniques to avoid pain and overuse problems. Along with preparing washed fleece and locks, we will also do some “prepping” of already prepared fibers, and blending of different fibers together. Knowing how to use all of these tools will allow you versatility and choice in your fiber preparation and spinning. No experience with hand tools necessary; advanced beginning spinning skills helpful.

Participants should bring:  a flick card, a pair of hand cards, a pair of hand combs, and a spindle or your spinning wheel to spin from the fibers we prepare. Some extra combs and cards will be available.

Material Fee: $25  Includes samples for examination, some extra fiber prep tools, fibers for spinning, notebook with handouts, sundry supplies.
