#207  Joan Sheridan  Fair Isle for the First Time     Full Day Friday  9am-4pm  Bldg 10 South   $100

Skill level:  Intermediate

Workshop Description:   Join in the fun of stranded color knitting the Fair Isle way. You will be introduced to the yarn of Shetland as well as a bit of the history and the unique story of this colorful technique. We will use traditional jumper-weight woolen-spun yarn (equivalent to fingering weight). After a bit of practice in knitting with two colors, you will begin knitting your own Fair Isle headband or one of our two introductory-level hats using patterns that Joan developed to teach this time-honored technique. Topics to be covered include several ways to knit with two strands of yarn at the same time, yarn dominance, yarn management, tension and tails, and using color charts. Your kit must be ordered ahead of time as there is homework. Extra kits will be available for late registrants. You can expect an email from Joan a few weeks before class with other “nice to know” information as well as what to expect in class.

Students should bring:

Your standard knitting kit including stitch markers (approx. 20, locking preferred), yarn darning needle appropriately sized for fingering weight yarn, scissors, pencil for notetaking plus US 1 and US 3 needles for circular knitting to support the style with which you are most comfortable. The kit must ordered ahead. We will not ship kits after August 6. Kits will be available by June 1 at https://heritagespinning.com/store/Knitting-c155252539.

For swatching in class, please bring an additional set of US 3 needles to knit a flat swatch about 5” wide. Swatching yarn will be provided as part of the kit cost. Note, kits also include extras that will be used in class. Headband is $30. Hats are each $50.

Homework:   Follow the pattern provided with your kit and knit the ribbing using the smaller needles and work the increase round about the ribbing. Leave the ribbing attached to the needles and yarn.

Material Fee: ***Note:   kits also include extras that will be used in class. Headband is $30. Hats are each $50..

Class Limit:  12
