#203 Joan Sheridan —Weaving Krokbragd on a Rigid Heddle Full Day Thursday 9a - 4p Bldg 10 South $100
Skill level: Intermediate
Workshop Description: In this workshop you will learn the basics of weaving Krokbragd on a rigid heddle loom. Krokbragd is a traditional weft-faced Scandinavian weaving technique woven on a twill threading that is used for rugs, bed covers and door way insulators in Norway and Sweden. Technically a form of bound weave, Krokbragd is unique in construction and extremely versatile in patterning. After studying the ins and outs of the weave structure, students will weave a sampler of their choice using patterns provided. Krokbragd is slow weaving, but the results are worth it!.
Students should bring: A warped rigid heddle loom at least 10 inches in width, 4 shuttles (10-12" stick shuttles or boat shuttles with extra bobbins, a pick up stick 12 to 15" long, extra warp thread (8/4 rug warp), at least three colors of worsted weight wool (Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride, Germantown Worsted, or any 100% non-superwash wool)--leftover skeins are perfect. If you would like to weave the sheep pattern, make sure to include sheep colors. Feel free to bring a loom stand. In addition, bring colored pencils (erasable are nice) and a pencil for notetaking. Optional: a tapestry beater to help place the weft more firmly.
Homework: Put a 10" wide warp (80 ends) on the loom using 8/4 carpet warp that is at least 2 yards long (including waste) usng an 8 dent reed. Fully thread the heddle but wait to do the final tensioning in class. If you'd like to practice more, put on a longer warp.
Material Fee: $25 Covers: Shed stick, 20 Texsolv heddles, handout, tape.
Class Limit: 12
