Skill level: Intermediate

Workshop Description:  Take your spinning to the next level with alternative plying techniques! These techniques add texture, color, and sparkle to your yarns, and can actually transform them to a completely different shape. We will learn basic spiral plying as well as how different angles affect the finished look of your yarn. We'll look at how uneven tension creates different types of effects, including bubble yarns, beehives, and "baseball yarns. " What makes a good plying thread/yarn? We will look at different types of plying threads, and I'll provide resources where the student can get the good ones to add to their own spinning. We will also talk about steam-finishing yarns for a perfectly balanced yarn.

Students should bring:  *Spinning wheel in good working order. *At least two empty bobbins. *At least two bobbins with singles of different thicknesses, nothing too thin; no lace weight, etc. Extra fiber for spinning initial singles. *Threads you already have that you might want to try. **Strongly recommended to bring your own portable seating for a comfortable class! **

Homework:  At least two bobbins of thicker singles, thick & thin singles, singles of varying fibers with texture, etc. A wide variety of singles weights/fibers/textures creates very different/unique plyed yarns with the techniques we'll be learning.
